Obedience Training - Chewing

All dogs have individual characteristics and behavior patterns just like we humans do. Yet there are some common habits that are irksome and almost all dogs do it. That is where Obedience training comes into the picture. When you get a puppy home after the first few days of adjusting, you will notice that the puppy loves to bite things. They like to chew just about anything like your hand, your shoe, socks, furnishings and also end up spoiling many things in your household. This is something unavoidable with the puppy because they will eventually learn not to do it after a lot of reprimanding. However the unfortunate thing with many dogs is they continue their excessive chewing habit for a long time like until they are two or three years old. This is where you have taken some immediate and harsh measures to stop your dog from chewing up everything.

Chew bones: As soon as you get your puppy get some chewing bones for it so that when it feels like chewing it takes the bone. If a grown up dog is still chewing everything it finds then buy it a bone and say that it is his bone and he can chew it. The moment he touches anything else like your slipper or shoe, immediately take it away from him and say no. Make sure that he understands what you meant and then put his chewing bone in front of him. Your dog may not take the bone and mostly it would smell it and turn its head away. Leave it at that. Keep repeating it until he understands.

Your dog leaves your shoe and starts with your curtains: Dogs typically when asked not to do something they will continue their habit but with a new thing. When you snatch the shoe away your dog thinks that he is not supposed to touch your shoe but he can chew on the curtain. You have no choice but continue with the same rule by saying no and still putting the bone in front of him. The whole process of getting him out of the habit is going to take long and requires a lot of patience because you are trying to break an old habit.

Why does your dog chew? Another thing that helps is finding out the reason why your dog is chewing on to everything. Often the reason is that your pet is bored and lacks attention. Try talking to your dog and spending some quality time with it everyday. May be he is feeling ignored and is resorting to such things to get your attention. What your dog does not realize is that it is getting negative attention. You have to make that effort of putting in some time for your dog. Also another common reason is stress and yes even dogs get stressed out. If he is kept in a secluded cage or tied up for too long your dog might resort to such habits the moment he is let loose.

Every wrong habit of a dog can be rectified through obedience training and it is easy provided you are consistent with the effort.
