Dog Training - Who's Being Trained? You, or the Dog? You might have laughed when you read the title of this article! You'd be surprised how many people think they are actually taking their canine to dog training schools to train the dog. Reality is both are being trained! Think about it! How do you get the dog to do something if you don't know how to ask him to do it in the first place? Isn't that the point of obedience training, to learn how to ask a dog to do something, and then teach/show him what he needs to do? If you think you're only training the dog, then who do you think will be running the other half of the show? Most trainers worth their salt will work with the dog's owner one on one when there is time to do so. This is fairly remarkable since many of the trainer's at dog training schools may be volunteers, and the fees you pay go to run the school. This isn't always the case, but just something to be aware of. What makes the trainer's job a lot more difficult is if the owner has the YABUTS! A familiar disease many trainers hear over the course of teaching lessons. The YABUTS always start a sentence in reply to something the trainer has just finished explaining about the reason their dog does so and so by saying "Yeah, but Fido knows he's done wrong. I can tell by the look on his face!" etc. The trainer has tried to explain dogs don't appreciate right versus wrong, it's instinctive behavior etc. and are met with yeah, but! Trainers are there for a reason, to teach you about dogs, and how to handle them to make your life easier and the life of the dog a lot more pleasant. It pays off in the long run to actually "listen" to what you are being told. After all you are there because you don't know what to do with your dog. They on the other hand DO! Will the dog be happier for the training? You bet he will! Why? Dogs that are given a job, something to do and know their place in the pack (human family) are happier knowing there are rules and routines to follow. Try going to a home where the dog rules the roost and you will know instantly what a fiasco those people have on their hands. Lesson is? Dive into training with a zest and learn all you can to make life with your dog a pleasure, not a pain in the butt.
