Dog Obedience - Puppy Training

All of us love our pets very dearly and seldom are harsh and disciplinarians with them. However if dog obedience is not taught to your pet, your dog can actually turn into quite a handful. Most pets listen to their master’s commands the first or the second time they ask the dog to do something. However some pets can be really persistent and this is one sign of being spoilt.

Many dogs are used to sitting on the couch with their masters while watching television or just lazing. Most of us do not realize that this same habit can get to extremities and to a point when your pet does not move or give place for you also to sit on your own couch. This is a result of spoiling your dog and not disciplining it. You have a similar situation where your dog refuses to let go of your couch and now you want to reclaim your couch.

There are some simple and yet strict steps that you have to take to control your dog because you have to accept in the first place that your dog has been spoilt and by you. You know that your dog is not going to give your couch back for you to sit and there is no point by holding its collar and dragging it down to sit on the couch. And it will continue doing so and will get only worse with time.

The first day when you get back from work or chores and find your dog sitting on the couch, say “get off” to your dog. Since your dog is not going to listen to you the first time try repeating the same words two or three times and sound more firm each time. Finally say it really loud if you have to and drag the dog down using the collar. This action will make your dog think that you are not happy with it sitting on the couch and also may end up sulking in a corner. Your dog does not still realize that it is wrong.

Continue repeating the command every time you see your dog on the couch and eventually graduate to a single word like “no” You will notice that in a matter of 10 days your dog is actually lesser on the couch. It will take really long to completely stop the habit though. At least you have taken control of the situation and you can get your dog off the couch when you want to.

It is ok to have your dog on the couch every once in a while but your dog should also know its limits like for example when you have guests over your dog should know not to jump on the couch and should be capable of listening to you the first time. That is why dog obedience plays such an important role in the up bringing of a dog. If you absolutely have no time to train or discipline your dog then you should get a dog trainer who will do it for you. The important thing is for you to address the problem one way or the other.
