Dog Obedience - Dog Personalities

Like some human beings are louder than others, some are silent and some are reserved, some dogs are also louder than the others. We find different shades of people. Similarly dogs have different shades too and some dogs are more vocal than the others. They bark too much! However barking dogs can drive their owners and the neighbors crazy if they do it all the time. Also remember the saying” barking dogs seldom bite” and it is true to a large extent when literally taken. You need not worry that the next thing he will do is bite someone. However this habit will set as a bad example for dog obedience.

Dogs bark to get attention most of the time. There are some cases where the dog can be stressed out or has an anxiety disorder. In that case the barking will have other associated symptoms too. When your dog is barking unnecessarily try to find out why he is doing it. It could be something to do with kids and passers by teasing your dog, or he is barking at someone. To cure the unnecessary barking in your dog you first have to get to the bottom of the problem and then work your way up. It is a difficult thing to do but not impossible.

Also consider the breed of the dog. Some breeds just bark a lot like the hounds, spaniels, and some other short breeds. Hounds especially are bred so that they can be used as a barking dog for warning people and as a guard dog. These dogs are usually suspicious about everything and so they bark trying to warn their owner. When a hound or a similar breed bark they will have a good reason for it. If you have a busy neighborhood that makes your dog bark too much then keep your dog inside.

Dogs that are ignored can bark a lot. Make sure you spend time with your dog and he gets a lot of attention from you. Your dog should have a routine that he needs to follow everyday like an exercise regime, playing time and so on. If your dog has nothing to do all day then he won’t let you be in peace. Once you have identified the problem in your dog you can solve it. Barking is a simple problem and all dogs can be cured of it. Finding out the reason is more difficult. In any case have a “turn off” command for your dog which will make him keep quiet. Train your dog everyday to listen to you with this command.

To teach dog obedience like staying quiet first select a simple command name. Don’t say stop barking or something which tells him what not to do. Instead use single words like “quiet”, “silence” or just “shsh” While training your dog use a training collar. If he keeps quiet praise him or reward him. Repeat this process whenever your dog barks. It will take some time for your dog to understand but he will eventually learn it. Do not ask him to keep quiet when he has a genuine reason to bark. What is genuine for your dog may not seem the same to you. So be considerate and try to understand why your dog is barking every time he barks.
