Dog Training - The Importance of Exercise and Activities Exercise and play with your dog or you will have a bored brat on your hands! Some dogs are pretty laid back, and they don't care about exercise as much as other breeds, but they still need to have their minds and bodies stimulated. The highly active breeds, (working dogs) will go stark raving bats without a daily long romp. The importance of exercise and activity also helps with dog house training as well. How? It gives your dog routine. And to be perfectly candid, when they are out running like silly fools, it stimulates their bowels and bladder and makes them go more frequently. Dog house training isn't an easy chore with younger pups, but if you have the patience and try a few easy to do tricks, things should work out. One old tried and true method is the "paper chase" with a bit of a twist. Use newspapers in the areas your pup tends to have accidents. When pup pees there, clean up all of the papers except one or two sheets that have their scent on it. Put down clean paper, but move it one inch closer to the door. Try catching pup in mid piddle and say "Potty Potty" or something like that, and praise for the effort. You can't catch them all the time, so make the best of a wet situation. Each day move the papers one inch closer to the door, and before you know it they will be outside. Bravo! Remember to be consistent, that is the key. Method two is using the crate. Most dogs do not like to piddle or do anything else in their sleeping areas. The best time to use the crate is during the night when pup is sleeping with the rest of the "pack" in your bedroom. When he whines, you go let him out. Praise. Return to crate. Do the same thing during the day, but crate for shorter periods of time. On crate release, immediately take outside. Praise. Other tips to remember for dog house training are whatever goes in, comes out. After they eat, wait five to ten minutes then take outside. When they drink, wait a bit and then outside you go. When they play hard or chew on bones or toys and stop, whip them outside. And if they collapse in a puppy heap on the floor from playing too hard and snooze, when they wake up, Mother Nature calls and head for the yard. Oh, and make sure you have a rug deodorizer on hand! |
