The Poodle There are three types of Poodle available including the Standard, Miniature and Toy. The Standard Poodle is a medium to large sized dog that features a wiry curly coat. The Miniature is a small to medium sized dog that has a curly or corded coat. The Toy Poodle is a small dog that has a curly coat. These dogs are often referred to as Tea Cup Poodles. The Poodle is as long as he is tall and should have a square silhouette. They come in a variety of colors including black, white, apricot, red, silver, and brown. Some are multi-colored, or parti-colored, but these dogs cannot be shown. The country of origin for these dogs has been listed as France and Germany, but they have been traced back to the ancient Egyptians and Romans. These dogs have been popular all over Europe for several hundreds of years. They are excellent retrievers and gun dogs. Many are skilled in herding, dog obedience training, tracking and agility. These dogs have also been used as water dogs as derived from their German name of Pudelhund, which means "splashing dog." Poodles are intelligent and active dogs. They have been known for their intelligence for quite some time as they are often used in circus performances and have been for several centuries. These dogs are also excellent hunters and it is not uncommon to see a Toy Poodle point birds. These dogs have been classified as highly-energetic and can easily get into mischief. The Standard Poodle tends to be more relaxed than the smaller miniature and toy poodles. The smaller dogs tend to be much more excitable. They are all generally friendly towards strangers and are great with children. The Miniature Poodle excels at learning tricks and they are great companions. They don't like to be left out of the family's activities. Some love children, but some miniatures tend to be sensitive and nervous. They may be reserved towards strangers as well. Socialization is important for the Miniature poodle and you should be sure to purchase your dog from parents that you like, as they tend to carry the same personality traits. These dogs rarely become aggressive, but do make good watchdogs. They do not generally bark much and get along fine with other dogs and family pets. The Toy Poodle is highly responsive and pleasant dogs. These dogs should be well socialized as puppies, for they tend to be reserved around strangers. They may snap if they are teased or surprised, so you should be careful with children. The older Toy Poodles tend to be more patient with children and are good with other pets. These small dogs tend to bark a lot and should be trained not to do so. Any effort that you put into socializing the dogs will be rewarded in the long run. These dogs may be demanding, but are generally perky and easy to live with. Poodles are excellent watchdogs and very people oriented. They are easy to train and adapt easily. They enjoy daily exercise either in the form of a walk or play time. These dogs are fairly athletic as well as agile. |
