The Rescued Beagle While I was attending college I worked for a dog kennel. The kennel mostly boarded dogs for people when they went on vacation, but they would also take in several dogs that had been picked up by the humane society and needed to be adopted out. We would take care of these dogs and get them ready for adoption. One day, we had the sweetest little Beagle puppy come in. He was absolutely adorable and full of energy. One building of the kennel was separated from the other dogs that were being boarded, just in case they had a disease or something that could be spread to the other dogs. We kept the Beagle puppy with the other dogs, but he had a kennel of his own because he was so small. Every morning when you turned on the lights in the kennel all the dogs would begin barking, but one bark was distinctly different. You could hear the little Beagle bay coming from the end of the kennel. When you went to his kennel he would shake all over with excitement. He was so small that his tail would literally shake his whole body, it was so funny. He was such a challenge to take care of because he was so small and wiggly. He would wiggle right out of your arms and he was so fast he would get out the kennel gate before you could even think about catching him. While you cleaned the kennel it was better that you just let him run around the building and say "hi" to the other dogs because you couldn't control him and clean at the same time, he was too quick. Like most other of the humane society dogs there would be some that would be adopted quickly and others that would not. Nobody would adopt the pup, so I decided to. I couldn't ever figure out why no one would want such an adorable puppy. Sure, he was quite energetic, but he was only a few months old. He was just being a normal Beagle puppy. Today, this Beagle puppy is an older dog named Tex. He is your typically happy go lucky Beagle. He loves to go on walks, but you're best off with an extension leash because he has to check out every smell you come across and once he's on the trail, he's on the trail. He's a very determined walker, but he is also respectful of your commands. Like most Beagles, off leash commands are hard to work on because they are easily distracted. It doesn't take much to catch their noses and they are ready to go hunt it down.Tex loves his yard. He loves to sniff and hunt whatever shows up in the yard. He also likes to be inside with his family though. He can easily entertain kids for hours and he stays entertained as well, which is good for a Beagle. They need something to keep them busy so they don't think about getting into trouble. If you're looking for a great family dog, you really can't go wrong with a Beagle. Plus, they have the most loveable bay and are great for dog obedience training. |
